Do you have a job interview scheduled? It is normal to feel a little nervous. However, it is important that you stay relaxed, calm, and composed so that you can stay at your peak performance. Here are 5 tips for staying calm.

Prepare

Make sure to adequately prepare for your interview, in every aspect. Not only should you be fully prepared for likely questions and know how to answer them and introduce yourself, but you should know where and who to go to, where you can park, what to wear, and so on.

Don’t Obsess

At the same time, it is important not to obsess about every detail. Rehearse your answers, but make sure to rehearse them in different formats and articulate them in several ways so that you don’t come across as too rehearsed. Playing the same words over and over again in your mind will only cause you to be more stressed.

Arrive Early

Don’t be last minute. Make sure to arrive early so that you feel prepared. If needed, wait in a nearby coffee shop until five to ten minutes before your scheduled meeting. Also, make sure to go to the bathroom before the interview.

Breathe and Relax

Slow, deep breaths have actually been proven to lower heart rates and instill a sense of calm. Practice some breathing techniques if/when you start feeling that anxiety rise. Try to relax and take your mind off stressful matters.

Visualize

Finally, visualize yourself at the interview giving excellent answers, being calm, and giving a great first impression. It can do a lot to calm your nerves as well as serve as a sort of positive self-talk. These positive images reinforce the idea of a positive outcome and can actually help you ease into conversation with your interviewer.
