A big move certainly comes with its own set of difficulties. From finding an apartment, or hiring a moving company, to finally (and most importantly) securing a job. Finding a great fit from far away is definitely tricky, but we have plenty of resources to make your job hunt less stressful. Here are some tips to jump-start your cross-country job search:

Do Some Research. This is the first and by far the most important step! Since you don’t have the luxury of being able to go door-to-door to check out your prospects, utilize your resources to find companies that might be a good fit! Take out as little as an hour a day to surf the web, make calls, and send out inquiries via email. Though this step can be the most tedious, taking the time to explore all of your options will make a big difference in the end.

Update Your Resume. Not only should you add any relevant experiences you’ve had since your last time applying for jobs, but you shouldn’t forget to update your resume to reflect your new residence! As simple as it seems, it’s very easy for someone to skip over your resume thinking you don’t actually live locally. Once you have your new address or phone number, make sure to update your resume, job applications, cover letters, and any online resources you’ve been using like LinkedIn or Indeed.

Narrow Your Scope. Once you’ve updated your information and have done your fair share of research, it’s time to delve deeper. Begin actively pursuing specific companies you feel would be a great fit for you. Even if they aren’t necessarily hiring at the moment, showing your interest and getting your name out there is a great way to establish connections and open up opportunities for the future.
