Hunting for a job often feels like a full-time job in and of itself, especially in the 21st century. Between searching for relevant jobs across a number of websites, tailoring your cover letter, and filling out countless online job forms, there is no doubt that it is a time-consuming effort.

The very start of a job search is typically the most draining. However, with some simple tips you can maximize your job search to make it far more time efficient. Here are 3 tips on how to do just that:

1) Strategy and Priority

The Harvard Business Review recommends developing a strategy based on employers you are targeting and prioritizing accordingly. Some choose to start with the companies they would love to work with and build their networks there.

Others choose to focus on the lower priority employers first to understand what skill sets are needed and use that knowledge for the rest of the job search. There is no right or wrong approach, so it is up to you to decide what you would like to focus on first. Either way, having a strategy will help you be more targeted in your efforts, which will yield better results.

2) Using Creativity

Whether it is sourcing contacts on LinkedIn, or using your own network as a starting point, do not be afraid to think out of the box. The easiest option might be to just work through job boards and apply to everything you see, but that will only drain you of your time and energy – without getting many results.

Think about what resources are specifically available to you and what services you can use to help you be more successful in your efforts. It’s also important to make sure you have a clear and concise resume that showcases your skills and qualifications. Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice!

3) Location and Niche: Some Questions to Ask Yourself

Before you start scanning the job boards, think about a few simple questions that could potentially help you determine what you are looking for. Think of it as a blueprint for your job search:

  • Should I move, or stay? Some like their hometowns and prefer to stay local – in which case, are there local job boards you could search to stay within the area? If you are interested in relocating, perhaps think of cities or towns you would like and search regional job boards.
  • Am I interested in a niche industry? If so, start with job boards that are dedicated to your industry before going into the general pool. If you have not quite determined that yet, then general job boards will give you a better idea of what you are looking for. Additionally, if you are lacking the necessarily skills to do what you want, consider taking classes or working toward certifications to bridge that gap.
